1890 - A Raftsman

a raftsman"Don’t expect me to celebrate! The state builds a railway with a timber terminal in every place and our venerable rafting trade is left out of work. Our timber route out of the municipal forest is simply severed: "You’ll manage!" They simply change the course of the Kinzig by a few metres. For centuries we have rafted the tree trunks down the Kinzig to the Rhine and returned with news and good money. And they tell us: 'But you can help with loading the timber!' Intolerable."
